Demographic Data

Demographic data were reconstructed using archives collected at Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques and at Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques. These archives cover population movement (mortality by age and sex, fertility by age of mother and sex of child) and censuses (population censused by age and sex).

Mortality

The French Human Mortality Database was reconstructed using these archives and a protocol inspired by the Human Mortality Database one. The French Human Mortality Database provides lifetables by sex and geographical unit since 1901. It includes military mortality during the two world wars as well as deportation deaths during the Second World War.

Population

With lifetables, we estimated populations by age and sex for each geographical unit since 1901.

Fertility

The French Human Fertility Database will complement these two databases in the future. It will be constructed using these archival raw data and a protocol inspired by the Human Fertility Database one, it will make available age-specific fertility rates for each geographical unit since 1901.
